At a glance
Mardi Himal is a challenging and beautiful 4-day trek in the Annapurna region that offers breathtaking views of the Himalayan mountain range. It’s a lesser-known route compared to the famous Everest Base Camp trek or Annapurna Circuit trek.
We started the Mardi Himal trek in Ghandruk after finishing the Poon Hill trek. Like on most trekking routes inside the Annapurna Sanctuary you have several options where to start and to finish the trek. Most people we met on the trek did the Poon Hill or Annapurna Base Camp trek before the Mardi Himal it seems quite popular to combine the route with one of the other treks in the sanctuary.
Mardi Himal used to be the lesser-known trek in Annapurna Sanctuary to see quite a lot of people hiking this route was a bit of a surprise for us. There are still fewer people on this route than on the Poon Hill, Annapurna Base Camp, or Annapurna Circuit but it’s definitely not as off the beaten trek as it used to be.
Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu
We will be sending an airport representative to receive you at the Tribhuwan International Airport (TIA). Then you’ll be transferred to a comfortable hotel in Kathmandu. Considering your exhaustion, we have planned this day for a complete rest. If you wish, you may roam around the city or you may just explore the people, houses, markets, roads etc.
Day 02: Drive to Kande and trek to Pittam Deurali (2,125m)
A drive from Kathmandu to Kande takes about 7 hours so at the early morning we’ll be taking the bus and reach the valley of Kande in the afternoon. Then we’ll have time to sight Nepal’s one of the most beautiful sites i.e. Kande To roam around the Phewa Tal we’ll hire a boat and row around the scenic lake surrounded by forests and high white peaks. As we don’t have sufficient time for sightseeing in this town we’ll explore the valley in later days. For today we’ll eventually manage a suitable hotel in Kande for accommodation.
Day 03: Trek to Low Camp (3,150m)
An hour ride in a van takes us to a tiny town of Phedi from where the real and the formal trek begins. After climbing up the stairs for about an hour and a half, we’ll be starting gentle ascent passing the beautiful rice fields, viewing some of the mountain peaks and numerous local settlements. Going on we need to walk up and down the landscapes to reach today’s final destination i.e. Potana. There we’ll be finding a proper guesthouse where we’ll put our feet up.
Day 04: Trek to High Camp (3,700m)
The exciting walk to High Camp is one of the scenic walk throughout the trek. After early breakfast, we head on to the trekking trails. We walk under the shades of Rhododendron forest until we reach Badal danda and then the trail continues on the grassy ridges. The trail gradually ascends throughout the hike to the High Camp. We walk above the line of hills and the temperature reduces along the path. After walking for almost 5 to 6 hours, we finally reach High Camp.
Day 05: Hike to Mardi Base Camp and trek down to Sidding (4,500m)
Today we wake up early in the morning and walk for few hours to reach the Upper view point or Mardi Himal Base Camp. The view of the Annapurna Sanctuary can be clearly seen. The panoramic views of South face of Mt. Annpaurna, Himchuli and Machhapuchhre (Mt Fishtail) is truly rewarding. It’s time to experience the accomplishment of our journey to Mardi Himal base Camp. After spending few hours here, we return back to the High Camp for breakfast. After having lunch and resting for some time at High camp, we walk down for 2 hours and reach Low Camp.
Day 06: Drive Back Direct to Pokhara or via Lwang (Mukhkhora) Trekking
Now we’ll be returning back to the previous camps through the trails, trekking along the forests and sighting the environment. We’ll move on for the Mardi Khola River and through the further trek, we reach Siding village where we’ll be staying for the night. We will set up our tented camps for the night stay.
Day 07: Pokhara City Tour
Moving through the pastures and some villages we reach to Lumre where will have access to service of transport. So we’ll drive back to Pokhara and according to the will we may have shopping or visit few more wonderful sites (Begnas lake, Davis’s Fall, Mahendra Cave, Chamara Cave etc ) in Pokhara or just rest in the hotel.
Day 08: Drive back to Kathmandu
Getting to the end of the trip, we will have a flight from Pokhara to the capital city where you’ll prepare for the return. We can share the photos or have shopping. We may also celebrate the successful completion of our journey and if you wish we may suggest you some more exciting and interesting tours & treks in Nepal.
Day 09: Trip Ends
